A Definition of Englishness

In April 2004 the Daily Telegraph ran a competition for the best definition of Englishness.   This was the winning entry:

He views the Channel as a trench,
Laughs at the Germans, hates the French.
Though docile on his starchy diet
He'll rush abroad to quell a riot.
He hates a fuss, seldom complains,
Accepts poor service and late trains.
But full of ale, there's hell to pay -
Remember that on St. George's Day!
